What is a crisis nursery

Crisis Nurseries offer emergency shelter services to children with a primary focus to prevent child abuse and neglect. A Crisis Nursery provides short-term care while their parent or guardian addresses a  crisis or is engaged in their own services elsewhere. Beth's House respite services are voluntary, meaning the children remain in the custody of their parent while in care. However, parents are required to complete parenting classes and work on their agreed case plan to improve their support and parenting 'tools' taught by local partner organizations.

Funding dependent, children will be provided all essentials (bedding, diapers, clothes, and nutritional meals upon  receiving services.

By providing 24/7 support for children, crisis nurseries help strengthen and preserve families, can prevent foster care placements, and/or CPS  involvement.

Our Vision

Children 0-5 years of age are eligible to stay for up to 30 days in a calendar year as mutually agreed on with the parents and staff. Children are cared for in a home like setting using trauma informed care.  Parents are encouraged to visit their children when able to.

Why

Parents and guardians who use crisis nursery services may be facing a range of crisis situations which make them unable or unavailable to safely care for their children while they address their family’s needs. They may be addressing their own inpatient medical, mental health or substance abuse services, or are incarcerated. Families might be struggling with meeting the family’s basic needs including securing safe, affordable housing or employment, or are overwhelmed and lack other community or social supports.

Benefits

Preventing child abuse, foster care or further public systems involvement, reduces  instances of adverse childhood experiences, and promotes long-term child and family wellbeing.

Crisis Nurseries are not new.  They have been around since the early 1970's and many programs have been  successfully duplicated across the nation.  Nurseries offer families a practical alternative when families are lacking resources who otherwise would have possibly experienced a foster placement.

We Need Your Help!

Kern county does not have a crisis nursery in place for families to utilize.

It is the goal that Beth's House be able to extend services to children from neighboring counties including Los Angeles and Fresno County.

Beth's house will need enough funding to purchase a house that can be renovated as well as operational costs for 24/7 quality care.

We are also recruiting passionate individuals who are willing to help with planning and outreach.
